The Canine Good Citizen program (CGC) was created by the American Kennel Club in 1989 to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs.  Dogs who pass all ten test items receive a certificate from the AKC.  Both purebred and mixed breed dogs are eligible for the CGC program.  Because training your dog involves a lot of time and practice, many people find it helpful to work towards a goal.  Passing the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen test is an admirable and achievable goal for most dogs.

The CGC test evaluates the dog’s reaction to strangers, other dogs, and distractions as well as the basic obedience skills of walking on a loose leash, sit, down, stay, and come.  All test items are performed on leash.  According to AKC rules, each dog should be wearing a buckle or slip collar made of chain, leather, or fabric.  Training tools such as pinch collars, head halters, and harnesses are not allowed during the test.  While owners are allowed to praise and encourage their dogs throughout the test, treats and toys are not permitted.
